Why is personal branding important for field medical professionals?

Personal branding is more important than ever. A personal brand is the unique combination of skills and experiences that make you who you are. It is how you present yourself to the world. Effective personal branding will differentiate you from the competition and enable you to create trusting relationships with key stakeholders. To be a continued successful and valuable resource to an organization, the field medical professional needs to optimize the networking opportunities and maintain a solid personal brand. 

What are two ways an MSL can develop their personal branding?

  1. Create a “brand statement” or “elevator pitch” that captures your personal brand.  Organize and create this by: establishing your target audience; distinguishing key accomplishments; determining 3 strengths and what engages you in your work; identifying what makes you unique
  2. Create a strategy to enhance your personal brand. Focus on raising visibility and building and nurturing a strong professional network 


What is one short term and long- term result of MSLs using their personal branding in their career?

  1. Short term: Getting clear on what your current brand is and how you are perceived in the marketplace.  
  2. Long term: Come up with a future for your brand and where you want it to go.  What skills or capabilities do you need to develop and create and action plan towards that goal. Then live out your brand!
